[edit]

This article is currently titled "Shona art". However, this is an imprecise and disputed term. See for example included references by F Mor and Celia Winter-Irving, who point out that many of the artists who lived or worked in what is now Zimbabwe are not ethnic Shona. I believe it would be better to merge this article with the current page Art of Zimbabwe to form a more extensive article that covers all fine arts created by people who lived or worked in that geographic area at any time in history. One of the causes of confusion in these terms is that important recent works, that have gained an international reputation, are Zimbabwean stone sculptures, from artists who have collectively been called the "Shona sculpture" movement. Again, some of the artists generally accepted to be part of this movement are from other ethnic groups but Wikipedia itself uses that term, for example in infoboxes for the artists' biographies.

For the moment, I have added links on this page to Art of Zimbabwe and vice-versa. Mikedt10 (talk) 12:48, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Name change for article and content removal

[edit]

This article almost exclusively focuses on Zimbabwean sculpture so in accordance with the already remarked-upon need to fix this situation, I have undertaken to change the name of the article to "Sculpture of Zimbabwe". There is also some material here which covers Art in Zimbabwe generally and I have removed that material and worked it in to the article entitled Art in Zimbabwe. So we now have an article that is an overview of Art in Zimbabwe and then a more specialized article covering Sculpture of Zimbabwe. Keizers (talk) 19:29, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
