I think more references would bring this article up to C-class. Editor5807speak 17:23, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Former Quarr Abbey House

[edit]

I have corrected an apparent serious error by inserting a current photo of Quarr Abbey. The previous photo in the article (which is also retained with changed caption) seems to be of the Quarr Abbey House. It seems to me from a comparison of the photos that the house was not demolished but actually incorporated in the 1907-12 rebuilding. (This helps to explain why the job was done so quickly.) So, though I have no reference for it, I've taken the liberty of changing the implied demolition to ". . .the new abbey, incorporating and extending Quarr Abbey House". I will, of course, follow this up and seek to obtain proper citations. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 05:28, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Next time this article is edited, I would appreciate it if you could add to the History section, that the stone from the quarry was also used for the construction of Winchester Cathedral. They were able to transport it across the Solent, up Southampton Water, thence up the River Itchen to within about 300 yards of the construction site - a voyage of about 30 miles. Construction of the Benedictine cathedral commenced in 1093 on the command of William the Conqueror of Normandy.

We will need some written citations for that interesting information. Is there anything in any written history to which you can direct us. Richard Avery (talk) 11:10, 26 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology of Quarr

[edit]

I have had a perfunctory whizz round but have been unable to find any etymology for "Quarr". It would be worth adding if discovered. I'm thinking it might be an anomaly derived from the Quare maps, see - [Pembury] and Burcombe, (see appropriate paragraph) Richard Avery (talk) 11:22, 26 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
