phalcobaenus or phalcoboenus?

[edit]

“OE” appears to be the accepted modern usage, but in d'Orbigny (1835) and in Sclater (1861) the typography looks like a single-deck italic a (a) in æ ligature, rather than œ. And the Greek root has 'αι'.

I'm not saying to move the page or rename the genus, but do wonder how to transcribe the source materials. ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 08:50, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you’re dubious, zoom in at the top of this page, where it says "Mas et fœm. : Rostro cærulescente". Then scroll up a teeny bit to Phalcobænus montanus. The 'æ' in Phalcobaenus has a distinct stem in the middle, just like 'caerul…' but unlike 'foem.' ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 09:18, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh, located the illustration print. Is bound in the Atlas tome 9, with 1847 on the title page, but citations elsewhere say the livraison (fascicle) of prints was first issued in 1834, before the text. The caption clearly says "PHALCOBŒNUS montanus" with an OE. Probably a mis-print of the author's intention, but gets priority unless officially declared otherwise. ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 18:21, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I feel sufficiently confident to add a sentence to the article about this. Special:Diff/1182346354 ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 19:00, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
