Airline?

[edit]

There seems to be some confusion over the name of the airline. Kolavia appear to have owned the aircraft, but Kogalymavia were the operators. Mjroots (talk) 14:05, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was my understanding they're the same airline; but with two different names. wackywace 14:07, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No immediate rush to move article around. All will be clear in a day or so. Mjroots (talk) 14:16, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"MAK"

[edit]

The abbreviation "MAK" needs to be clarified, I think. At least the full word should be written. HeyMid (contribs) 17:03, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Would anything really be gained by spelling it out - Межгосударственный авиационный комитет? MAK works fine here. Mjroots (talk) 20:06, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, then I understand why we should abbreviate it – I don't believe any non-Russian-speaking person would understand Russian. HeyMid (contribs) 20:31, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Source

[edit]

The first source seemingly does not cover the fact that 34 people were injured. Where in that source does it state the amount of injuries? HeyMid (contribs) 17:47, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Some nice progress now, at least. However, the "34 people were hospitalized; 32 with injuries from smoke inhalation and two with burns" part needs another source; the current one does not cover that. HeyMid (contribs) 20:53, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Conflicting reports

[edit]

As usual, there are conflicting reports about this accident. Did the a/c take-off and suffer a flame-out or was there a fire while taxying. Was it 116 passengers and 8 crew or 117 passengers and 18 crew?

My gut feeling is that the latter case is correct in both scenarios. Fire whilst taxying is borne out by eyewitnesses (BBC source). 8 crew minus 2 (3?) flight crew doesn't leave many cabin crew at all. Source for 117/18 is a Russian ministry, so it should be reliable enough.

Again, no immediate rush to rewrite the article, but this will need to be borne in mind as things become clearer. Mjroots (talk) 22:41, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Like you say, Mjroots, this is a pattern known and expected from any recent aircraft accidents/incidents. For example, when Air France Flight 447 crashed, they were not entirely sure whether the people in the plane had died. Regarding Kolavi Flight 348, hopefully things will be sorted out later. HeyMid (contribs) 23:06, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've rewritten the article as it is now clear that the fire occurred during taxy for take-off. The aircraft did not take-off and return to Surgut. Mjroots (talk) 16:59, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

QFE

[edit]

The QFE is given as 784hPa. This seems improbably low. 86.5.176.168 (talk) 06:54, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also the translation seems to have mixed up ft and metres. In any case, weather seems to have been irrelevant to this accident, so I removed the entire METAR. 86.5.176.168 (talk) 23:24, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted the deletion of sourced info. AFAIK, Russia uses metres for aviation purposes. The figure 784 may well be a misprint for 984, but we go with what the source says. Mjroots (talk) 23:36, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Guesswork and AFAIK is no way to write an encyclopedia. 86.5.176.168 (talk) 07:34, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
