kavod is respect, honor. i kavod is either no shame, or that someone disrespects you. "ach, today's kids. i tell you, they have no <kavod> to the elderly." also: "it is a great <kavod> being here today" and congratulations is "all the <kavod>".

All of the above is essentially correct, and yet, the suggested translations above take an inappropriate sense of the word. A better translation of the Hebrew ichabod to English would be dishonor. A reading of the 1 Samuel 14 chapter suggests as much too.

Nonsense claim

[edit]

Quote:

Some scholars have argued that Ichabod may be the historic figure underlying the biblical Jacob, having first concluded that both Jacob and Ichabod are corruptions of Jochebed/Jocabod, meaning yahweh is the [divine] glory.[7]

The name Jacob comes from the root ain-kof-bet ("to follow" and also the noun for "heel" or "ankle"). The name Ichabod comes from the root kaf-bet-dalet (from which come both all forms of the noun and verb "respect" and also one of the words used for "weight" or "gravity").

There is no way there is any substance to the claim. (Adding my true user name) elpincha (talk) 14:02, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
