Clean up!

[edit]

The page has been cleaned up, reorganised and had new information and pictures added. Hopefully it's much better now! Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 21:34, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling, capitalisation, and grammatical problems need to be addressed

[edit]

1) Pronounciation guradu'ārā - is misleading as "gurdu'ārā" is closer to the way the word is pronounced.

2) The word is spelt "Gurdwara" so needs to be consistent(see: https://www.britannica.com/topic/gurdwara, https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/gurdwara)
The word Guru + dwara = Gurdwara as per Punjabi grammar conjugation patterns (Comparable Punjabi word conjugations are: Guru + Purab = Gurpurab; Guru + Simran = Gursimran. Contrast with Hindi congugation rules where Guru + Purnima is specifically Gurupurnima).
The spelling Gurdwara is: a) Closer to the original Gurmukhi spelling ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ
b) Has been used historically by Sikh/Punjabi organisations and publications (including SGPC)
c) Is more prevalent than the spelling Gurudw... originated non-Sikh/non-Punjabi publications not paying attention.

3) Capitalisation is needed for specific gurdwara names or titles - e.g. "Singh Sabha Gurdwara on XYZ Road is a large gurdwara". Compare Synagogue e.g. "Dohány Street Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary, is the largest synagogue."

Visiting a Gurdwara

Requested Move

The result of the proposal was move to Gurdwara. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 03:32, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GurudwaraGurdwara — Alright. It seems that this article is somewhat confused, the lead spelling being Gurdwara and the Article title Gurudwara. It seems this article was originally created under the name Gurdwara, and was moved to gurudwara by the user Lucky009 in August 2008. Gurdwara has a slight lead in google searches of gurudwara, and the article was originally at "Visiting a Gurdwara", it seems, so I believe the article should be moved back to Gurdwara. Gurdwara has a lead of about 10-6 over Gurudwara in a Google News search, and is used by some, but not all official Sikh organisations. • Support It appears to be spelled as Gurdwara all over Wikipedia, including in this article. If it really is wrong, it should be changed everywhere, but right now it appears to make more sense to move this back to Gurdwara for consistency. Propaniac (talk) 15:40, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
    • It should be changed because from what I know, it is wrong. The reason that a Gurudwara is called a Gurudwara is because when translated, the word roughly means "God's house" vs Gurdwara does not mean anything, but is almost a slang that the generation of today has started using when reffering to a Gurudwara.Gkpan (talk) 01:19, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Temple?

[edit]

Gurdwaras aren't temples. The definition of a temple is a place where offerings and sacrifices are made to a higher deity. No offerings are made in the Gurdwara. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.43.28.98 (talk) 14:38, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We need to adopt the terminologies that our Gurus gave us, not those that their adversaries have. The word 'Gurdwara' is in the Guru Granth Sahib, 'temple' in the English dictionary that is wrong meaning for holy place of Sikhes....Gurudwara is right name of Sikh prayer house .Gurudwara is right word. Gurdwara Sahib ........Sikh prayer house Temple ........Hindu prayer house Church ....... Christian prayer house

Dasam Granth

[edit]

According to Sikh Code of conduct . Dasam Granth kirtan is not allowed .DELETE Can you please remove that part JUIHJKJNKL

thanks Chapter V

Kirtan (Devotional Hymn Singing by a Group or an individual) Article VI (a) Only a Sikh may perform kitran in a congregation.

(b) Kirtan means singing and scriptural compositions in traditional musical measures.

(c) In the congregation, kirtan only of Gurbani (Guru Granth’s or Guru Gobind Singh’s hymns) and, for its elaboration, of the compositions of Bhai Gurdas and Bhai Nand Lal, may be performed.

(d) It is improper, while singing hymns to rhythmic folk tunes or to traditional musical measures, or in team singing, to induct into them improvised and extraneous refrains. Only a line from the hymn should be a refrain. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.2.39.105 (talk) 01:26, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
