"This first paragraph in this article is wrong. Von der Ahe NEVER owned the franchise that later was the American League St. Louis Browns. He owned the American Association St. Louis Browns (which was a professional league then) which later (in 1892) became the St. Louis St. Louis Cardinals National League franchise. He sold his team in the late 1890s, before the American League St, Browns were founded in 1902. Von der Ahe is officially the first owner the St. Louis Cardinals had in 1892."

1885-1890 World Series didn't happen

[edit]

Referencing the sixth paragraph - "In 1887, after a poor showing in the World Series,...."

Major League Baseball's World Series did not exist in 1885 and did not involve the American Association which collapsed in 1891. By all historical records - including that from the St. Louis Cardinals and Major League Baseball - the first World Series was in 1903, and the first won by a St. Louis team was 1926. MLB considers pre-1903 championship series to be precursors to but are in fact not World Series Championships.

Championship series of the 1880 era were fractured and disorganized (St. Louis Browns Stockings played 15 games vs Detroit in 1885, losing 10 of them).

As such von der Ahe did NOT own a World Series championship team at any time in history. — Preceding unsigned comment added by The RW (talkcontribs) 01:47, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Birth Date Discrepancies

[edit]

The birth date listed in this article is likely incorrect. Germany birth records indexed on FamilySearch.com indicate he was born on 2 October 1848 in Hille, Prussia, and this is corroborated by The Summer of Beer and Whiskey: How Brewers, Barkeeps, Rowdies, Immigrants, and a Wild Pennant Fight Made Baseball America's Game. The author of the book, Edward Achorn, notes the discrepancies and posits that Von der Ahe claimed that he was born a few years later in order to avoid military service in Germany.
