Mortice's comments

[edit]

The page that was originally listed as Chain I've moved to Chain (disambiguation) because it lists all different sorts of uses of the word 'chain' but the majority of things that link to it need to link to a page that just defines the metal link structure that I hope is now adequately described (in stub so far) on Chain.

I started this as I took the challenge to resolve all the links to the disambiguation page for Chain, and in doing that found that there was no page anywhere that just described a 'chain' - I hope this is the right solution.

I'm temporarily using the page Link chain which will redirect to this one, until I'm happy that all links to the Chain page are correct and aren't ones that should be linked to Chain (disambiguation). I guess I'll fix those by wholesale moving all Link chain links to Chain links later.

BTW I found the 'move' technology wouldn't let me move this page (the stub description of 'Chain') from my user area to here since there was a page here already - which was the redirect left from when I moved Chain to Chain (disambiguation). So I did what they say you're not supposed to do, and just wholesale moved the source text of my new page. However, there was no history since I'd only just written the page, so I hope this text is adequate replacement for a blank history page --Mortice 21:38, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

categorization

[edit]

The list of items in the second section could be improved by having headings and subheadings--starting with roller chain vs. the other main category (non-roller chains? 2-D flex chains? linked-loop chains?). It's a mess now, starting with two entries for bicycle chains, etc. Ccrrccrr 17:03, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Invention

[edit]

When was the chain invented? /Yvwv (talk) 09:38, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on what type of chain you're talking about. According to the Complete Guide to Chain it's 225 BC for metal link chain: http://chain-guide.com/breaks/brief-history-of-chain.html NipponBill (talk) 23:17, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[1], states it was used in anchors on boats in 332BC. I feel the history needs more sitations, Marasama (talk) 17:15, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We need a bit more than that. It doesn't say where this took place. Is this chain in China, Europe or where?Dean1954 (talk) 10:10, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Inapropriate Image

[edit]

I find it very inapropriate to put an image of a monkey on a chain here. It has nothing to do with the topic. It should be removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.34.73.141 (talk) 17:02, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not clear what was inappropriate or offensive about the image, but it didn't seem to have any purpose so I have removed it unless anyone has a reason it is relevant to the article. 48v (talk) 00:10, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

More chain types

[edit]

Please add examples (with pictures) of more types of chains, such as e.g. the Snake chain or the Ball chain, here or in the Jewellery Chain article.

Indeed, ball chains allow unlimited swiveling. An important property. Jidanni (talk) 00:10, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

The way this article currently stands, it appears to be mostly a list of expressions and concepts in English that have the word "chain" in them, with no organization of them other than alphabetical. But a "lavatory chain" and a "rolo chain" aren't different "types" of chain: one is a chain categorized by its function, and the other is a chain categorized by its link shape and size. I have the sense that this article should be about a narrower sense of what "chain" is, or should have at least two major sections, perhaps one the functional applications of chain and two the various physical structures of chain. I am also noting that the article has only one reference, and that is to an Internet page, which makes me think the topic is too broad. In any case, the pastiche approach doesn't seem to be doing the subject any good. KDS4444Talk 07:05, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Material

[edit]

Shouldn't someone list what chains are made of? I was searching for this but I got nothing in the article. Spinosaurus75 (Dinosaur Fan) (talk) 10:55, 29 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
