I've removed the phase-diagram from this page since bainite is a metastable microstructure.

German Article

Somebody PLEASE translate the german article and offer its content to this article!!! 78.149.79.156 (talk) 12:42, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As a comment to the given definition I suggest every reader to take a look at a paper of Hillert and Purdy. There, a following conclusion is drawn :

"(...) "bainite" should only be used for eutectoid (two-phase) structures. If an acicular precipitation occurs without diffusion and with a glissile interface, it should grow with a high rate and should be regarded as martensite. If there is diffusion soon after its formation, the product should be called tempered martensite."

Scripta Materialia Volume 43, Issue 9, 16 October 2000, Pages 831-833

The above comment by Hillert and Purdy is not correct, since bainite can form very slowly without carbides.

I reworked the introduction and added to the formation and morphology sections. Some of the information in the intro was iffy in terms of correctness. I added sections describing the two competing theories on bainite's formation to that section, though if anyone has time it really needs to be looked at further. Probably 2/3 of that formation section talks about phases other than bainite and is not relevant enough to warrant 3 full paragraphs in my opinion. I also added bits to morphology on upper and lower bainite. If anyone can find public images of these, I think it would help the article quite a bit. Mjc5169 (talk) 00:17, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think there are images of bainite on the commons. Let me take a look. Wizard191 (talk) 14:19, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, thanks. Ideally I'd just go take some images using the SEM on campus here but that requires me to have a sample with bainite in it.. lol Mjc5169 (talk) 18:28, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
