Shropshire articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
[edit]Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Shropshire articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Shropshire pudding
[edit]Hoax? Just figure some editors of this page may have heard of this (Shropshire pudding). I'll post this at Talk:Shropshire too, as this is sort of a graveyard. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:28, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
River Perry, Shropshire
[edit]I have been working on the River Perry, Shropshire article, as it was only three lines long. It had a Shropshire Stub template on the article, but was not listed as part of your project on the talk page. Rather than just remove the stub template and lose the connection with Shropshire, I have added a Wikiproject Shropshire template to the talk page. If this is not how it should work, please feel free to remove it. Bob1960evens (talk) 23:01, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Nomination of Christ Church Shelton and Oxon for deletion
[edit]A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Christ Church Shelton and Oxon is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Christ Church Shelton and Oxon until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. -- 202.124.73.239 (talk) 13:58, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Katherine More and related pages
[edit]Hello,
I would like to draw your attention to the Katherine More page and related pages:
Jacob Blakeway
Samuel More
Richard More
Background
I created these pages in 2011 and in so doing violated a Wiki principle in that I am the author of two books about the history: one factual, the other a novel. My intention was not to promote the books, but to highlight an historical event that seemed to have escaped the limelight. I accept that this violated Wiki principles and that the pages could be seen as original research. Within a few weeks I was contacted by an American resident in the Pacific North West who bought both novel and history, and requested additional information about the story. I was happy to assist, and made much material available. The American correspondent's main interest was in Richard More, because he claimed to be a descendant; the correspondent also made known that he was in touch with a Wikipedia editor.
Shortly afterwards, I found the pages being multiple edited by an editor called Muggins. The edits were chaotic, inaccurate, full of typos, and much material was deleted and / or changed. I soon found myself in a edit war with this individual.
Muggins deleted some of my contributiosn to the talk:Katherine More pages where I had explained why I had created the pages. He accused me of using the pages to promote my novel and of original research. He referred the matter to a senior editor DGG who also appears to be resident in the Pacific North West. DGG ruled that I was in error and instructed me to edit out references to my work, which I did, though reluctantly, because I did not, and do not, agree that the material was original research.
My Appeal
My appeal is to editors in Shropshire. I would like Shropshire wiki editors to seize these pages back. Whilst largely accurate, they present a sanitised version of a Shropshire story. They reference sources that are very difficult to check, whilst ignoring sources that are freely available (and I am not just referring to my own work here). The pages are badly written in Americanese throughout.
These pages should be written in English, with English spellings. Information about these individuals should make sense to an English reader. Jacob for example was a neighbour or the Mores, not a 'neighbor'. Sources should be freely available, preferably from an online source if one exists.
The Katherine More page has a lengthy section on her royal antecedents. It is my belief that this was written to satisfy the genealogical ambitions of my original American correspondent. It established nothing that would be seen as a royal connection on this side of the pond. It is not a descent in the male line and represents the kind of link that most well-to-do families at the time would have been able to evidence. I therefore think that it is unremarkable and ought to be removed. I would make these edits myself but experience suggests that I would be accused of disruptive editing and my edits deleted. I feel that a group with the authority of the Shropshire Wikiproject might be able to succeed where I failed.

Please help get Shropshire ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September
[edit]In September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades I or grade II*), as recorded by English Heritage. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?
In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in England, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?
Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by English Heritage. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.
The data still needs the attention of local editors:
- The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
- The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
- The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
- The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
- Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
- The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
- References may be added according to normal WP practice.
For further information, please see Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United Kingdom.
If you have any queries, please post them not below but on the Organizers' help page on Commons.
Anything you can do to help improve these lists will be much appreciated. The final deadline for cleaning up is 31st August.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
[edit]Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
WikiProject X is live!
[edit]Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Suggested additions to Featured and Good Articles 'owned' by this WikiProject
[edit]Noticing the paucity of Featured and Good Articles listed, can I suggest the following biographical articles (to which I myself have contributed) be added for the subjects' connections with Shropshire. This could also encourage other users contribute citeable material to enlarge on their Shropshire associations:
Featured Articles:
- Benjamin Disraeli, 1840s MP for Shrewsbury.
- Pain fitzJohn (died 1137), lord of Ludlow, Bridgnorth and Caus Castles
- Mary Martha Sherwood, grew up in Bridgnorth.
- Alexis Soyer, worked for 3 years as head chef for family in Aston Hall, Oswestry.
Good Articles:
- Edwin Alderson, Master of South Shropshire Fox Hounds 1914-23, resident in Shropshire (notably Hanwood) until after he retired from hunting in latter year.
- Arthur, Prince of Wales, died at Ludlow Castle.
- John Boydell, born at Dorrington near Market Drayton (not Dorrington near Shrewsbury as has been commonly mistakenly believed).
- John Brunt, born in vicinity of Chirbury, educated at Ellesmere College.
- Thomas Crump, born allegedly in Cleobury Mortimer, 19th century curate of Bitterley and county cricketer for Shropshire.
- Josce de Dinan (died 1166), lord of Ludlow Castle.
- Eric Lock, grew up in Shrewsbury area vicinity of Condover and Bayston Hill.
- Molly Morgan, born in Ludlow and lived in vicinity in Shropshire until transported to Australia in 1788.
To which I would add, in the geographical category:
- M54 motorway - only motorway in Shropshire, which contains most of its length.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
[edit]Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Article on Cressage

Parishes project
[edit]I have started a project for missing civil parishes at User:Crouch, Swale/Missing parishes. The missing parishes in Shropshire are:
- Abdon and Heath
- Chetwynd Aston and Woodcote
- Donnington and Muxton
- Hadley and Leegomery
- Hollinswood and Randlay
- Lawley and Overdale
- Stirchley and Brookside
And these exists as a redirect only but should have separate articles:
- Chirbury with Brompton
- Little Ness
- Quatt Malvern, unsure if this needs an article
- Richard's Castle (Shropshire)
- The Gorge, Shropshire, unsure if this needs an article
- Worthen with Shelve
- Wrockwardine Wood and Trench
A total of 14, see User:Crouch, Swale/Missing parishes (3)#Shropshire. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:39, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
[edit]I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Shropshire Music Foundation - wrongly tagged to this WikiProject
[edit]I googled that article thinking it was connected with the county but found, when I checked its linked sources, it has nothing historically or geographically to do with the county. The name came from an American music teacher called Liz Shropshire who founded what is now called the Peace Through Music Foundation. I have left a comment on its talk page arguing for the article's title to be changed to the organisation's present day name.Cloptonson (talk) 19:13, 19 November 2022 (UTC)
Listed buildings in Shropshire
[edit]We currently have a titling issue relating to the articles on Shropshire listed buildings. The specific articles are:
- Grade I listed buildings in Shropshire
- Grade II* listed buildings in Shropshire Council (A–G)
- Grade II* listed buildings in Shropshire Council (H–Z)
- Grade II* listed buildings in Telford and Wrekin
- Grade II* listed buildings in Shropshire
The first of these, the Grade I list, covers the historic county of Shropshire. The concern relates to the second, third, tangentially to the fourth, and to a lesser extent to the fifth. The second, third and fourth, quite sensibly, split the county into three parts, due to the sheer number of Grade II*s. The parts are Shropshire (district) (A-G), Shropshire (district) (H-Z) and Telford and Wrekin. The problem comes with the titles and introductory paragraphs of the second and third, and tangentially, the introductory paragraph of the fifth. The titles are "Grade II* listed buildings in Shropshire Council (A–G)" and "Grade II* listed buildings in Shropshire Council (H–Z)". The introductory paragraphs read: "This article comprises a list of these buildings in the county of Shropshire Council" (my bold). The issue is that there isn't a county, or indeed any area as far as I am aware, called Shropshire Council. There is Shropshire, the ceremonial county, and two unitary authorities, Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire (district), the latter of which is administered by Shropshire Council.
My proposal would be to rename the second and third article to:
- [[Grade II* listed buildings in Shropshire (district) (A–G)]]
- [[Grade II* listed buildings in Shropshire (district) (H–Z)]]
and to re-word the introductory paragraphs of the second, third and fifth to follow the wording of the fourth, i.e. something like: "This page is a list of these buildings in the Shropshire (district) of the county of Shropshire". These proposed wordings can, of course, be discussed/agreed if the overall proposal is acceptable.
I should be most interested in any views. The creator of both pages, Nev1, has not edited for four years and the second most prolific contributor has been banned for sockpuppetry, but I am copying in Crouch, Swale as a major contributor, and Johnsoniensis, to whom I am grateful for first flagging the issue, a decade ago! KJP1 (talk) 12:53, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- I agree, I've wandered about making such move requests due to "Council" not really being appropriate but wasn't sure where to move to and while the double brackets don't look great they are at least accurate. Crouch, Swale (talk) 12:56, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- Does it look any better with square brackets for the letters? Can't really change Shropshire (district) as that is the place. KJP1 (talk) 14:55, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- [[Grade II* listed buildings in Shropshire (district) [A–G]]]
- [[Grade II* listed buildings in Shropshire (district) [H–Z]]]
With three votes to move, and none opposing, I've gone ahead and made these changes. KJP1 (talk) 10:13, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
