Among the crowd at last year's Wikipedia Day; notice the lightning talks on the whiteboard at left, and the open space grid in colored paper on the wall at right.
Wikipedians presented ideas to improve the encyclopedia as well as make it more accessible to users at the February 2013 meetup in New York City. Panelists (l to r): John Randall, Program Manager, Telecommunications Equality Project @ The Roosevelt Institute; Molly Deblanc, OpenCourseWare Department Liaison, MIT; Lane Rasberry, Wikipedian in Residence, Consumer Reports; Wesley Chen, Program Associate, Open ITP

The Wikipedia Day 12th Birthday Bash NYC was a celebration and mini-conference held on Saturday February 23, 2013, at the Washington Square Campus of New York University. It's hosted by NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, and also supported by Wikimedia New York City, Free Culture @ NYU and other Free Culture Alliance NYC partners. It will be held at the NYU Tisch Interactive Telecommunications Program building (ITP), located at 721 Broadway, between Waverley Place and Washington Place.

NOTE: The northbound R will not stop at 8th Street - New York University station, the closest subway station to the location. As usual it will serve Union Square seven blocks away. People coming from north will not be affected. The closest station with full service will be Astor Place (IRT Lexington Avenue Line) on the 6 line. The A, C or E or the D and F will stop as usual at West 4th Street–Washington Square station which is also nearby.

The NYC celebration is one of a number of Wikipedia Day being held in the United States and worldwide.

See our past years' local celebrations at Wikipedia Day 2010 NYC, Wikipedia Day 2011 NYC and Wikipedia Day 2012 NYC.

You can register for the Wiki-Conference here—which can also be linked as bit.ly/wikidaynyu.

Event format

[edit]

Participation (and pizza and cake!) will be free, with room for ~100 participants, who should bring a photo ID for the door. All are welcome, and we are especially interested in seeing newcomers to join the experienced Wikipedians/Wikimedians. We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from cultural institutions interested in developing Open Education projects.

In addition to the party, the event will be a modified unconference, with dedicated plenary sessions (organized on this wiki), lightning talks to the whole assembly, and of course open space sessions (including an open space 'education track'). The Lightning Talks and Open Space will be determined during the event itself, so it will be good to bring your ideas with you.

There is wifi access, and we will give you the log in details on-site. Projectors will also probably be available for use by the various presenters.

Webcast

[edit]

The webcast is archived at http://livestre.am/4m0fB . It is over 7 hours long, but it can be fun and rewarding to just to drop in randomly on the timeline. Big thanks to Jennifer Baek (and her dad) for use of their Mac. There is a short missing piece where the Internet went down at the end of the Lightning talks. I do have separate HD video, and I may post a few presentations on YouTube later. Feel free to request on my talk page. Wwwhatsup (talk) 01:01, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey thanx for doing this.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 02:21, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ditto, thanks so much for putting this up. Was there a part missing at the end of the morning panel as well? I was looking for Ben's and Prof. Bjork-James's presentations (should have started around 02:27...). Glad most of it was captured though. Will parts of this be uploaded to the Commons later? Greatly appreciated, Mozucat (talk) 21:31, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Right. Let me have a look for that. Wwwhatsup (talk) 16:38, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
