The Lead City University of Ibadan, also known as LCU, is a private university located in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.[2][3][4][5][6]

History

[edit]

In 2002, the university submitted an application for establishment to the National Universities Commission. The Standing Committee on Private Universities (SCOPU) conducted verification and final assessment visits on August and September of 2003. At the end of the assessment visits, SCOPU reported that the profile of the proprietor of the university confirmed it had both the capacity and resources to establish itself as a private university. The university was "approved for immediate take-off" by the Board of NUC in December 2003 and was ratified by the Federal Executive Council on February 16, 2005.

The University was founded as City University, Ibadan. However, this name led to confusion and mistaken identity due to the existence of other universities with similar names. To address this issue, the Board of Trustees and Council of the University decided to change the name to Lead City University, Ibadan. This decision was made following a meeting held on March 7, 2005.[7] The name change was subsequently communicated to the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and other stakeholders. All previous documents relating to City University, Ibadan remain valid.[8]
