English: Pictorial diagram of how a satellite television system works. Video feed signals from the studios of many cable channels are transmitted to a satellite ground station belonging to the satellite network. Up to 1000 channels are modulated by frequency division multiplexing onto a 14 GHz microwave uplink signal, which is transmitted up to a direct broadcast satellite in geostationary orbit over the equator by a large parabolic dish. The satellite transponder receives the signal, translates it to another frequency, 12 GHz so it won't interfere with the uplink signal, and broadcasts the downlink signal with a higher power over the area covered by the network, usually an entire country or continent. A small satellite dish antenna mounted on the outside of each customer's home receives the signal, translates it to a lower frequency and sends the signal into the customer's residence over a coaxial cable. to a satellite television receiver, a set-top box next to the television set. The box demodulates the channel the customer has chosen to watch and sends the video signal to the customer's TV.
