Many people mistakenly assume that because NASA is part of the United States Federal Government, that all images from NASA fall under the public domain. This is untrue for many images, most notably those from the Jet Propulsion Lab.

Image Notes

All images found on the JPL web site should be uploaded to Commons contain the following Commons-template in their notes section, to remind others to caption:

{{JPL Image Copyright}}

Example: MER artist's conception.

Image Caption

When a JPL image is used, the JPL copyright message should appear under it. The template {{JPL Image}} can be used to accomplish this, as in the following example.

Example code:

[[File:Spirit Rover Model.jpg|thumb|200px|Artist's illustration of the [[MER]]. ({{JPL Image}}) ]]

This will be displayed as follows:

Artist's illustration of the MER. (Template:JPL Image)
