Surname updates
[edit]Thank you for all your diligent efforts in keeping surname and related articles consistent. Wikipedia relies on quietly methodical gnome work (that's a compliment around here) to stay up to date. If you would like any help, I'm sure some people at WP:WikiProject Anthroponymy would be willing to take an initial each, especially if you create an account just in case your IP address changes. Either way, thanks again for all the good work. Certes (talk) 22:13, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Edit summaries
[edit]Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that one or more recent edit(s) you made did not have an edit summary. You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or to provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances that your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits, an adequate summary may be quite brief.
The edit summary field looks like this:
Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)
Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary, and then click the "Save" button. Thanks! Laterthanyouthink (talk) 22:50, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I'm TechnoSquirrel69. I noticed that you made an edit to a biography of a living person, Buell (surname), but you didn't support your changes with a citation to a reliable source. Wikipedia has a strict policy concerning how we write about living people, so please help us keep such articles accurate. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 17:43, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
Please do not add or change content, as you did at Susan Roman, without citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. Waxworker (talk) 17:19, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
Please stop. If you continue to add unsourced or poorly sourced content, as you did at Dan Hennessey, you may be blocked from editing. Waxworker (talk) 00:42, 10 December 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I'm Pickersgill-Cunliffe. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Chas, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 22:13, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Please do not add or significantly change content without citing verifiable and reliable sources, as you did with this edit to Marty (given name). Before making any potentially controversial edits, it is recommended that you discuss them first on the article's talk page. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Philipnelson99 (talk) 22:36, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, as you did with this edit to Gina (given name), you may be blocked from editing. Materialscientist (talk) 00:08, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Hello. Your recent edit appears to have added the name of a non-notable entity to a list that normally includes only notable entries. In general, a person, organization or product added to a list should have a pre-existing article before being added to most lists. If you wish to create such an article, please first confirm that the subject qualifies for a separate, stand-alone article according to Wikipedia's notability guideline. Thank you. Copying birthdates to list articles
[edit]You seem to be copying birth dates from various Wikipedia biographies, and then adding them to lists of people. In many instances, you are copying unsourced content from one article to another. Please stop, or find reliable sources to support your edits. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:31, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
- I think on balance this is fine. If the dates are problematic in the original articles, those should be dealt with. I don't think we can expect a possibly new editor who thinks they are doing something useful to wonder if every last date is backed up by RS. Stefen 𝕋owers among the rest! - @StefenTower: Copying unsourced content from one Wikipedia article to another undermines the reliability of the project. That's why a consensus of editors have agreed not to permit sloppy editing such as this. Magnolia677 (talk) 17:44, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- It is reasonable to assume these dates are sourced in most cases. Let's stop biting editors over such minor matters. Stefen 𝕋owers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 17:53, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- No, it's not reasonable to assume at all, and WP:BLP is not a minor matter. Please stop encouraging an editor to continue violating one of our core policies.-- Ponyobons mots 17:59, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, it is, actually. Per WP:AGF we can expect that this information is generally entered in good faith from reliable sources. I will encourage the improvement of articles which this editor has indeed done. Please stop biting editors over good-faith efforts. WP:BLP is important, but that can be addressed in individual cases where the dates data happens to be incorrect. We can't expect an editor to spend a very long period of time confirming all those when enhancing the list articles. Stefen 𝕋owers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 18:09, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- "Per WP:AGF we can expect that this information is generally entered in good faith from reliable sources" is completely untrue. AGF doesn't mean anything of the sort. Pointing out Wikipedia's policies and guidelines is not biting, and there was noting remotely biting Magnolia677's message asking them to please stop and to verify/source their edits. We absolutely do expect editors adding information to list articles to ensure the content is correct, and you suggesting otherwise and even encouraging it is shocking from someone who has been here as long as you have. You are not aiding the encyclopedia or this editor with this advice.-- Ponyobons mots 18:39, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- What is shocking is that we have two editors here biting someone who is doing clearly constructive work in the Wikipedia. At least I now have a better idea for why we're losing editors, so I thank you for that. Until WP:AGF is repealed, I cannot budge from my position in good conscience. Overenforcement of rules on constructive article development is something I will not ever agree with. As a side note, if you have an expectation that editors who've been here a long time somehow have to agree with other long-term editors on everything, that we have to be some monolith, I gently suggest that's not the most reasonable expectation. Stefen 𝕋owers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 18:47, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- Again, there is no biting. Pointing editors to our policies and guidelines is not biting. Asking someone to please source your edits is not biting. At all. Your idiosyncratic views and poor advice that actually encourage this editor to continue violating WP:SOURCELIST, WP:V and WP:BLP is more likely to lead to another block for this IP and the proliferation of unsourced BLP content across the encyclopedia than any outcome you intend. There's a big difference between educating an editor on where they're going wrong and advising them to disregard core policies altogether. No response necessary, it's clear where you stand.-- Ponyobons mots 19:04, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
