Bananafish are a fictional species of fish discussed by J. D. Salinger (author of Catcher in the Rye) in his story "A Perfect Day for Bananafish." The fish swim into a hole and eat so many bananas that in their enlarged state they cannot escape. Eventually they contract banana fever and die. Such actions have brought about the idea that bananafish, today, are endangered.
