Etymology

[edit]

Unclear. Schuessler (2007) lists several proposals:

Likely related to (OC *kʰrɯb) & (OC *ɦleːb) ( (OC *kjub)'s dialectal synonym attested east of Tong Pass); yet not to (OC *l̥ʰjɯmʔ) (Schuessler, 2007).

Semantic loan from English sauce.

Pronunciation 1

Note:
  • chiap/chap - vernacular (“juice; dirty and sticky; very dirty to the point of oozing juice; unpleasant and pestering people”);
  • chip - literary.
