Etymology 1

From Bengali টিকা (ṭika), from Sanskrit तिलक (tilaka, tilak). In medieval Bengal, among many techniques, variolaters would make an incision upon the forehead, in which smallpox powder was rubbed. Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Perhaps a post-Vedic form of शिक्षा (śikṣā, study; knowledge); the consonant shift from ś > ț is also seen in टक्किबुद्ध (ṭakkibuddha, Takkibuddha). Alternatively, derived from दीपिका (dīpikā, light, lamp).
