Inherited from Prakrit 𑀖𑀭 (ghara), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀭𑁆𑀳 (*garha), from a metathesized form of Sanskrit गृह (gṛhá),[1] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥dʰás (“house”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰr̥dʰ-ó-s, from *gʰerdʰ- (“enclosure”). Compare Northern Hindko کَہار (kahār). Far cognate with Persian کرت (kart) and English garth / yard, Scottish Gaelic gàrradh (“garden; wall”) and Irish garraí (“garden; small enclosure; halo”), among others. Doublet of گَڑھ (gaṛh).
