Persian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Persian [script needed] (ptmwtn', ptmʾd- /paymūdan, paymāy-/, “to measure”), ultimately from *pati- and *maH- (“to measure”), the latter from Proto-Indo-Iranian *maH-, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁- (“to measure”). Cognate with Parthian 𐫛𐫅𐫖𐫀𐫅𐫗 (padmādan, “to measure”), Northern Kurdish pîvan (“to measure”), Sogdian [script needed] (ptmʾtʾy /patmātē/, “measured, frugal”). Akin to Old Armenian պատմեմ (patmem, “to tell, narrate”), an Iranian borrowing.
