[edit]As an animate noun, a feminisation of γραμματικός (grammatikós, “teacher of the rudiments, grammarian”) and as an inanimate noun, an ellipsis of γραμματικὴ τέχνη (grammatikḕ tékhnē, “grammatical art, grammar”).
