[edit]From Middle High German wæjen, from Old High German wāen, from Proto-West Germanic *wāan, from Proto-Germanic *wēaną, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wḗh₁ti, a form of *h₂weh₁-. Compare Dutch waaien.
