Etymology 2
[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Finno-Ugric *wole- (“to be, will be”) (present-day Hungarian van),[1] via pre–Old Hungarian vol-, via hypothetical *voly- (ly indicating /ʎ/), via vadźs- (dźs indicating /ɟ͡ʝ/),[2][3] and eventually (in the later Old Hungarian period) becoming vagy.[4][5] The other first- and second-person forms vagyok (“I am”), vagyunk (“we are”), and vagytok (“you are”, plural) also derive from this stem. The vowel o became more open at the same time.[6] Compare also vagyon (noun and archaic verb form).
Verb
[edit]vagy
- second-person singular indicative present indefinite of van: you are (informal, familiar)
- Coordinate term: ([third-person and] formal second-person form) van
- Hol vagy? ― Where are you?
