Icelandic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Old Norse vǫl (neuter plural or feminine singular). The word might be an Old Norse (or later Icelandic) alteration of an original neuter plural (the plural of val), since it is in Old Norse definitely attested in neuter plural but perhaps also in feminine singular, or else the feminine word is inherited from Proto-Germanic *walō and identical to Old High German wala (“choice”).
