Borrowed from Catalan trèvol, from Vulgar Latin *trifulus < *trifolum, from Latin trifolium, calque of Ancient Greek τρίφυλλον (tríphullon, clover), from τρία (tría, three) + φύλλον (phúllon, leaf). Doublet of trifolio. Cognate with English trefoil.
