[edit]Borrowed from Dutch symposium, from Latin symposium, from Ancient Greek συμπόσιον (sumpósion, “drinking party”), συμπίνω (sumpínō, “drink together”) συν- (sun-, “together-”) + πίνω (pínō, “drink”).
