[edit]From Middle Dutch stappen, from Old Dutch *stappen, *steppen, from Proto-West Germanic *stappjan, from Proto-Germanic *stapjaną. By surface analysis, stap + -en. The sense to go out may derive from op stap (“on the town; out”).
