Integrated loan verb from Sicilian allèstiri (“to hurry up”) and/or related Italian allestire (“to prepare, organise”, formerly also “hurry up”), from the adjective Sicilian lestu, Italian lesto (“quick”), of unknown origin. The senses “prepare, get ready, finish” are apparently derived as referring to the objective of hurry or quickness. Compare Spanish listo (“agile” and “ready”).
