Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Welsh honni, from Proto-Celtic *swonnīti, an o-grade iterative formation to *swannati formed after it spawned a neo-root *swenn-. Proto-Celtic *swannati is itself from Proto-Indo-European *swenh₂- (to sound).[1]

Brittonic *hw- (usually from Proto-Celtic *sw-) regularly delabializes to h- before o instead of becoming chw-.
