halu

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *halu, probably borrowed and derived from Proto-Germanic *halōną. The meaning "to fetch, get" that the Germanic word appears to have had could also explain halata (to hug) with the sense development "to go get > pull towards oneself > embrace", suggesting that it is of the same origin as halata (to want).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈhɑlu/, [ˈhɑ̝lu]
  • Rhymes: -ɑlu
  • Hyphenation(key): ha‧lu

Noun

[edit]

halu

  1. desire, wish, want
  2. urge, itch

Usage notes

[edit]
  • "for X" = the illative, allative (general) or translative case (to emphasize the purpose or goal), "to (verb)" = the first infinitive (general) or the translative case of the -minen noun (to emphasize the purpose or goal).
