From Proto-Germanic *hakjaną. Cognate with English hatch, German hecken.

häcka (present häckar, preterite häckade, supine häckat, imperative häcka)

  1. to breed, to nest (breed and raise offspring, of birds)
    Fågeln häckade i trädet
    The bird was nesting in the tree
    häckningssäsong
    nesting season
  2. (figuratively, colloquial) to stay relatively inactive in one place (often in a somewhat boring manner)
    Vi borde dra ut istället för att sitta här och häcka
    We should go out instead of sitting here "nesting"
