[edit]From Middle Dutch genēren, prefixed form of nēren (which also yielded modern nering), from Old Dutch neren, from Proto-West Germanic *naʀjan, from Proto-Germanic *nazjaną; from Proto-Indo-European *nes-. From this root the verb genezen is also ultimately derived.
