Alternatively from ciliegio, ciriegio (Tuscan), from Late Latin ceresus, from Latin cerasus. See also cerasa. Double hypercorrectism : Tuscan corrects intervocalic R → intervocalic L (assuming that cer- is a Lombard pronunciation) ; and corrects -SA → -GIA (mistakenly assuming -sa is another Lombard pronunciation) ; same for garea→ galera, another hypercorrectism
