Likely meant "wild goose" initially.
Sense "muscovy duck" (from the Americas) is attested in Phạm Đình Hổ's 1827 dictionary Nhật dụng thường đàm (日用常談 "Common Words Used Daily") , wherein ngan 鴳 was glossed as 赤靣鴨 (SV: xích diện áp) "red-faced duck" [1].
