Rhymes

[edit]

Hi. Not sure about some of your rhymes. For me, BIRO and BUREAU and ZERO are all very different rhymes, and only the last one is /ɪəɹəʊ/. What's your reference accent? Equinox 13:25, 4 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

I'm from California, which according to Wikipedia would mean that I speak California English. Khemehekis (talk) 04:03, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
So am I, but I can't say I've ever heard a native speaker pronounce bureau so it rhymes with zero (a former boss from the Philippines used to say it that way). Chuck Entz (talk) 04:52, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hmmmm . . . my Speak & Spell pronounced "bureau" that way. I think I remember seeing that as the correct pronunciation in some dictionary. Khemehekis (talk) 05:49, 23 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
I doubt it. The standard pronunciation is /ˈbjʊroʊ/ (rhyming with "you row" or "Euro"), but if you have trouble with the "bj" cluster, the "j" vocalizes and "bj" turns into "bi", with the "ʊ" getting lost, as if it's an off-glide. The result is ˈbiᵊroʊ (rhyming with "be a row", except the main emphasis is on "be" and secondary emphasis is on "row",so you have to listen carefully to hear the "a"). If you have this tendency, It will affect your perception, too: you won't be able to hear the difference between /ˈbjʊroʊ/ and ˈbiᵊroʊ. I have a hunch monosyllables may act differently than multisyllables: does pure sound the same to you as pier or peer? Or does it rhyme with doer and truer? Back from wikivacation and I find this on my talk page. February! I must really have been away for a long time. To me, "pure" is closest to per and purr, except it has a /j/ sound after the /p/ and before the vowel. You may be onto something about the monosyllables vs. multisyllables though: to me curious is /ʹkiɹiəs/ (rhymes with mysterious). I say /ʹpjʊɹɨtən/ rather than /ʹpiɹɨtən/, though, so it's probably not universal. Khemehekis (talk) 09:06, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

If you want help formatting citations, here are some basic templates - just fill in the relevant fields (not every one will be filled in every time). Kiwima (talk) 02:33, 6 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hey, muchas gracias! Khemehekis (talk) 02:35, 6 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Note (regarding Boraga) that |date= is for a full date (year, month, day of month), not the day of month, and shouldn't be used together with |year= or |month=! (One or the other will not be displayed.) Maybe the module error wasn't informative enough? Fixed now though. — Eru·tuon 09:16, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
