Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Ladino orthography

[edit]

Hi. I've noticed that you're using a Ladino orthography with diacritics that I don't normally see used and that we haven't deployed on Wiktionary before. I know that there are several competing orthographies in multiple scripts, but in general, it would be helpful to try to stay consistent, or else create entries in all spellings that are actually attested. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 21:38, 22 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm not sure if you're referring to Latin spellings or Hebrew spellings? Other people who had added Ladino entries before me may have been (in fact appear to have been) inconsistent and incomplete, most words don't even have any Hebrew spellings, only basic Latin entry. I have been very diligent in ensuring both Hebrew and Latin forms appear 100% consistent as originally written in authentic Ladino texts. There is however no standardized transliteration between the two alphabets (Heb./Lat.) so there is a variance of spellings. All of the words and usage examples I have added recently have been taken directly from original Ladino sources, most from Ladino Biblical translations such as this 1852-1853 Ladino version of Tehilim/Los Salmos, Salmo קלח/(138) in Hebrew script whence I added words from verse 2 (לוארי טו נומברי פור טו מירסידﬞ אי פור טו בﬞירדאדﬞ) (Loare tu nombre por tu merçed y por tu verdad.) e.g. מירסידﬞ (merçed) and בﬞירדאדﬞ (verdad) (that particular quote from the Hebrew text verse starts on the second half of the third line in sample image attached). For Latin transliterations there is a dilemma whether to do literal Ladino letter-for-letter transliterations or to "Hispanicize" it and use text that resembles more standard modern (Castillian) Spanish, both would be understood (e.g. "que" or "ke" for Heb. script Lad. קי.) I supplied both spellings recently for e.g. "ביינאבﬞינטוראדﬞו (byenaventurádo), on Latin spellings deferring to original Ladino sources in Latin text such as the Biblia de Ferrara ' and to whatever variant(s) is/are listed in Kohen & Kohen-Gorden 's Ladino dictionary (Latin script spellings) which sometimes has multiple spellings reflecting this divergence in approach to transliteration from Hebrew script (and always being vigilant keeping in mind to what degree modern transliteration of Ladino is influenced by modern standard Spanish orthography, remembering to include variant Latin transliteration text forms if they are listed somewhere). And of course there are dialectal differences within Ladino Latin orthography e.g. more predominant Oriental Ladino, somewhat like modern standard Latin American Spanish, reduces pronunciation of ⟨ç⟩ to plain ⟨c⟩/⟨ס⟩ [s] whereas Occidental Ladino dialects retain distinction, I maybe should add then the Occidental variant pronunciation of merçed transliterated ⟨מירצידﬞ⟩ with ⟨ç⟩ pronounced as [t͡s]. And there is technically a difference between Ladino, the literary and liturgical language vs. simply vernacular Judæo-Spanish, although the differences are not so great to warrant being considered two different languages... The introduction to Kohen & Kohen-Gorden discuss this very problem of transliteration standardization and the variants, concluding their philosophy (which I have adopted) on the subject: "Consistency within each system was attempted. At times different possible spellings of the same word are entered. For reminiscences from language used in the family, transcriptiion in Roman letters as close as possible to the phonetics recalled has been used; in some cases recourse was made to the Turkish spelliing and in limited instances the transcription system of the Dictionnaire du Judéo-Espagnol was used.

transvestism

[edit]

You added a lot of text here and mentioned Collins. Can you confirm that it's your own writing, and you didn't copy it illegally from another place? Thanks. Equinox 18:01, 1 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi. The Collins definition is "transvestite / (trænzˈvɛstaɪt) / noun; a person who seeks sexual pleasure from wearing clothes that are normally associated with the opposite sex". I can rephrase/re-word that part of the definition, if needed? Collins was not my primary source but mentioned for those not familiar with clinical psychology and psychiatry. The rest is derived from texts that can be found in the various editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), International Classification of Diseases (ICD), or any traditional books on clinical sexuality. Inqvisitor (talk) 18:35, 1 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
On a separate note, I trimmed a lot of the detail, which was excessive for a dictionary definition. - -sche (discuss) 18:56, 1 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

{{l}} in definitions

[edit]

Please do not use this template in definitions. It's intended to be used in lists and tables, not in running text to wikilink particular words. Like Wikipedia, Wiktionary uses regular links in this case. —Rua (mew) 21:18, 11 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

αρχαιολογία

[edit]

Hello - thank you for editing αρχαιολογία - but please note that the standard position for links to Βικιπαίδεια is at the page bottom under "Further reading". This is also the usual preferred position on English pages for links to Wkipedia. — Saltmarsh. 08:35, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Edit Warring

[edit]

Instead of constantly undoing, open a discussion. This is your only warning. Vininn126 (talk) 16:19, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Vininn126; actually we already had a very long discussion back in January 2022 on talk page: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Talk:pluo
The issue appeared settled; the page was the way it was for 9 months. Then the user returned in September 2022 to stealthily edit the page deleting everything from that time with no explanation, bordering on vandalism. That user should be getting the edit warring warning.

Clearly the issue wasn't settled- mostly because you never bothered replying to the last message I sent. And I have no idea what you mean by 'stealth-editing'- how was what I did supposed to be invisible? Do I have magic powers that I'm unaware of, and simply forgot to use them? Babel

[edit]

Would you add {{Babel}} to your user page? Is not mandatory, just useful. --Dan Polansky (talk) 16:31, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
