From Middle Low German torf, from Old Saxon turf, *torf, from Proto-West Germanic *turb, from Proto-Germanic *turbz, from Proto-Indo-European *derbʰ-. The Proto-Germanic etymon was possibly inherited in Old High German as zurf (one attestation). More at turf.
