Düsseldorf accent

[edit]

According to w:Hypercorrection, speakers with the Düsseldorf accent pronounce Tisch as Tich. Can this be confirmed? Rod (A. Smith) 19:39, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, this happens in various areas of the Rhineland. However, whether it's really hypercorrection is more doubtful. The phonemes /ç/ and /ʃ/ simply merge or nearly merge in these areas, as they do in most varieties of Central German. The merged phoneme thus has a certain range. Particularly after closed vowels /ɪ/, /iː/ it may be more palatal than elsewhere. Nevertheless, this palatal pronunciation is never general, but only some speakers use it. Therefore hypercorrection is a possibility. 89.14.33.48 19:26, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
