Placement of definitions

[edit]

I'm not entirely sure where to put the individual definitions for the different types of uses of this character (hyphen, dash, minus sign). The definitions should at least be at the entries for the more specific characters, and so to avoid duplication I've just linked this character to the other ones. This is a similar case to ' (apostrophe). --Bequw¢τ 05:27, 26 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Polysynthetic languages?

[edit]

In analysis of the grammar of polysynthetic languages, typically "words" (spaceless strings) are divided into morphemes by hyphens, each of which receive a gloss (also hyphen-delimited), as on w:Greenlandic language. Is there a name for this sort of notation?__Gamren (talk) 12:33, 2 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I'll tell you plain - I've had enough of this. Which one should be used in this sentence and why? --Backinstadiums (talk) 17:43, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Em dash (). This example is what Wikipedia describes as a "colon-like use" of an em dash.
I'm not sure we currently have a definition at that adequately covers this, though. It's not interruption or aposiopesis, parenthesis, quotation, or definition. 70.172.194.25 17:51, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
However, OP examples does use spaces before and after the symbol. Is that wrong in punctuation regards? Backinstadiums (talk) 18:19, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
