[edit]From Middle High German speiche, Old High German speihha, ultimately from the root of spitz (“spike”).
Cognate with Old Norse spik (“spike, sprig”), Old Saxon spēca (“spoke”), Old English spāce, Dutch speek, English spoke.[1]
