Etymology

[edit]

From Norwegian riksmål.

Proper noun

[edit]

Riksmål

  1. A conservative variety of Bokmål that is closer to Danish, sometimes using unofficial spellings that have been removed from standard Bokmål.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The Riksmål-Bokmål divide has mostly been bridged over the past decades, as the attempt to merge Bokmål with Nynorsk has been given up. Some traditional Riksmål forms have been reintroduced in Bokmål, while some radically Danish forms have fallen out of use even among Riksmål writers. Accordingly, “moderate Riksmål” may now be considered synonymous with “conservative Bokmål”. There are still certain “radical Riksmål” forms (like efter, sne, tyve) that remain nonstandard in Bokmål.
