Borrowed from Proto-Balto-Slavic, specifically from the 'Vistula Veneti' or 'Baltic Veneti', one of at least three known ancient tribal groupings going by the name *Wenet-. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁- (“to love, desire”) and cognate to Proto-Germanic *winiz (“friend”); see also Latin Venetī.
