From a form of Proto-Indo-European *kʷos, *kʷis. Compare Latin quō (where(to); why; so that) (Proto-Italic *kʷō) and Ancient Greek πω (, ever), Ionic Greek κω () (Proto-Hellenic *kʷō). Equivalent to *hwaz (what) +‎ *-ō (instrumental ending).
