[edit]Borrowed from Proto-Germanic *armaz (“pitiful, poor”), with later ameliorative semantic development. In the modern Finnic languages, the meaning "pitiful" survives only dialectally in Estonian, and in the derivatives *armahtadak, *armastadak.
