Proto-Celtic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Suggested to be contracted from *trāē, from earlier *trāsē, dative singular of *trās, from earlier *trāns (across).
Alternatively, from pre-Celtic Proto-Indo-European *tr̥h₂éy, alternative form of *tr̥h₂és, both fossilized inflected forms of a root noun **térh₂s.
In either case, derived from the root *terh₂- (to cross, go through).
