[edit]Borrowed from Ancient Greek Βᾰλῐᾱρεῖς (Baliāreîs), of uncertain ultimate origin. Possibly from βάλλω (bállō, “I launch”); Strabo suggests a Phoenician origin.[1] More at Balearic.
