Etymology

[edit]

From Old Irish Aífe, possibly from aoibh (beauty, radiance).

The name is unrelated to the Biblical name Eva, which was rendered as Éabha in Irish. Due to the similarity in sound, however, Aoife has often been (imprecisely) anglicised as Eva or Eve. (See Aoife on Wikipedia.Wikipedia ) For example, Aoife MacMurrough, a 12th-century Irish noblewoman, was also known as Eva of Leinster or Red Eva.
