Etymology 1

[edit]

16th century, alteration of Maseln, borrowed from Middle Low German māselen. Cognate with Middle Dutch masel (speckle), whence modern Dutch mazelen (measles), and Old High German masala (lump of blood). The form with -r- through conflation with Maser (“vein or knob in wood”, etymology 2 below), which is probably related.
