Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese olho (eye), from Vulgar Latin oclus (eye), from Latin oculus (eye), from Proto-Italic *okelos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃okʷ-, *h₃ekʷ- (eye; to see). Doublet of óculo, a borrowing. Compare Galician ollo, Spanish ojo, French œil and Italian occhio.
