From Proto-Finnic *hinta, from earlier *šimta-, possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *śímta, compare Lithuanian šimtas (“hundred”). Cognate with Estonian hind and probably also related to Erzya чонда (čonda, “ransom”).
